Care and Repair of Bluefish Fishing Lures
Whether you make your own bluefish fishing lures or you buy them from a store it is important to care for and maintain them so they last you a long time. If you are an avid fisherman than chances are you will go through a lot of lures even with proper care and maintenance so this is important. If you save the money you would spend on constantly buying new bluefish fishing lures you can spend it on other more exciting fishing equipment.
Storage is an important part of caring for and maintaining your bluefish fishing lures. When stored properly your bluefish fishing lures may require little to no repair. Keep you bluefish lures in a cabinet or drawer that is dry. If you live in an area of high humidity or near the ocean make sure metal lure are not exposed to the air. This may cause them to rust or corrode. If you have any fishing lures that have feathers or hair on them keep them sealed in an airtight container.
4. If you have bluefish fishing lure plugs that are cracked, chipped or just generally beaten up you can easily fix them up so they look almost brand new. Take a small paint brush and paint the bluefish fishing lure with enamel or lacquers to reseal it. If the plug is wooden you should give it an entire paint job. Use sandpaper to smooth it out and remove any leftover paint then, paint it with white enamel first for the first coat before you try and do anything fancy.
Whenever you are sprucing up old bluefish fishing lures you need to replace any hooks that are excessively rusted or corroded. If they are not excessively rusted or corroded you can easily repair them. Clean the bluefish fishing lures with either steel wool or an emory cloth and then wipe them with a rag with oil on it. Varnishing and painting the hooks with black enamel or lacquer when you are repairing them will help give them more longevity. You can also sharpen dull bluefish fishing lure hooks with a sharpening stone to ensure they are still sharp enough to catch a fish.
If the feathers or hair on your bluefish fishing lures are chewed, falling out or disintegrating you will need to replace them with new material. Remove all of the old hair or feathers and tie or glue on new material. These things can easily be purchased at a craft store and even some places that sell fishing supplies.
To prevent the need for repair of your bluefish fishing lures make sure that you carefully dry them when you are finished using them. If you salt water fish you should run them under fresh water to remove any salt residue and prevent corrosion. Additionally, organize your tackle box neatly so things aren't banging together or getting tangled up.
